How Johnson & Johnson is Using Digital Tools to Keep Supplies Moving

05/19/2021

As one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical brands, Johnson & Johnson has been in the vanguard of the pandemic response since the very beginning of the crisis. To achieve its goals, the pharma giant has been deploying several innovative tools and processes to make sure its life saving products get where they need to be.

Supply Chain Agility

Johnson & Johnson saw a surge in demand for Tylenol in the early days of the pandemic and needed to make swift decisions to meet this challenge. Thanks to AI technology, the company was able to pivot its manufacturing and logistics to increase supply of Tylenol by reducing the production of other, less demanded, products.

Scenario Risk Simulations

When the pandemic first hit, J&J knew new rules about staffing levels in its Italian manufacturing plants and distribution facilities were going to hit production hard. It therefore deployed powerful automated risk simulation technology to create worst-case scenarios and enabled the brand to create contingency plans for every possible outcome.

Track and Trace

Once its products leave the factory, they must often travel thousands of miles before reaching their destination. To create new levels of end-to-end visibility, J&J has installed track and trace sensors into all of it shipments. These powerful sensors are not only GPS locators, but can also monitor factors such as shipment temperature levels – incredibly important when it comes to many temperature sensitive medicines and vaccines.
