Brexit and COVID Forever Alter Dublin’s Industrial and Logistics Sector
The business of sending all kinds of goods and materials in and out of Ireland has been fundamentally altered by Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic. Logistics providers in all industries are having to evolve the ways, completely and permanently, they do business to make sure essential products – such as vaccines and medicines – can keep flowing into the country.
One of the main ways in which things have shifted is that the value of imports from the UK have, understandably, plummeted and many Dublin-based organisations are now turning to the EU for more of their supplies.
Increased need for stockpiling is placing a premium of warehouse space and landlords are essentially able to write their own ticket at this point. The situation also favours logistics providers who are able to guarantee regular deliveries to and from the EU.
This means that those logistics providers which are able to offer a reliable service to and from Dublin are going to be able to gain a significant market share over their less-agile rivals – at least until the pandemic and Brexit related uncertainty have faded into the background. This is especially true when it comes to critical pharmaceutical supplies as the demand for these is going to continue to be high for the foreseeable future.
